Servant Leadership: Dan

Dan working as a Clinical Psychology Resident for the United States Army

For this month’s newsletter, we interviewed one of our former Servant Leaders, Dan. Dan served here with us in 2015, and has since begun his career as a Clinical Psychologist for the U.S. Army.

How did you hear about the Servant Leader Program?

I heard about the SL program through a recruiter who frequently visited Wheaton College and spoke about the wonderful work that God was doing at His Mansion. As a psychology major, I was interested in seeing what His Mansion did and being part of it. I deferred entrance into a doctoral psychology program so I could come out and serve as a Servant Leader for a year.

How did you grow through this program?

It humbled me, continuously. I thought I had a lot to offer the ministry and was the best thing since sliced bread. Sometimes I was blind to my pride, but the normal, human mistakes I made opened my eyes to the perfection I was idolizing. Part of my growth was learning how to be more authentically human, and to see myself how God sees me. I am grateful to the staff, and Residents of His Mansion for the impact they had on me.

What do you do now, and how did the SL program help to prepare you for your career?

I am now a licensed clinical psychologist and uniformed service member in the U.S. Army and am finishing up my clinical training out in Hawaii. The Servant Leader program taught me so many things that have been applicable in my career such as the value of humility and growth, the healing power of the Holy Spirit, and our need for God to bring healing through relationship. His Mansion is a training ground that continues to bear fruit in my life, each and every day. I will always have a special place in my heart for “The Hill” and hope and pray the same for all who travel there.

Workgroup Warriors

Janet and Dennis Yau

We interviewed Dennis and Janet Yau who have been organizing workgroups coming to His Mansion with their church, and other organizations for the past twelve years.

When did you start coming to His Mansion? How long have you been coming?

Dennis: In 2011, a staff member spoke at our church. At the time, we were looking for opportunities to serve together as a family. That summer, we came to His Mansion for two weeks on a workgroup and to participate in the Healing in the Context of Community course taught by staff. In the years following, we organized groups from our church. A lot of the youth that were going to His Mansion year after year were having such a great time that we encouraged parents to come along and attend as a family. It was a culture shock for the parents especially, as they weren’t used to the openness and Christ-centered community living.

How has serving on a workgroup at His Mansion impacted your church?

Janet: One thing, to this day, is Prayer and Share. Since we love community and love to be vulnerable, we wanted to build a safe environment for vulnerability back home. We’ve started very small with just a few friends, and we try to do aspects of prayer and share, like worship, reading psalms, prayer, and sharing. The other thing we’ve taken back is some of the exercises that staff do with Residents. Having some training to help with conflict has been really beneficial for our community back home.

Praises

We want to take the time to thank the Lord for all that he has provided for us and accomplished in the lives of people here:

  • We’re thankful for the many lives the Lord has touched and transformed through our ministry. God continues to work in people’s lives here, and we’re honored to be a part of that.

  • We were able to replace the carpeting in our chapel. Thank you to all that have helped with this project and to the Lord for providing for our needs.

  • The Lord has abundantly provided for our facility’s needs, and we’ve been able to make updates to buildings like reroofing our multipurpose building and staff housing.

We’re thankful for all God has done and continues to do in and through those of us on the Hill. Thank you for partnering with us and keeping us in your prayers.

Prayer Requests

As the year continues, please be in prayer for our ministry. Here are some prayer requests and updates:

  • Pray that the Lord would bring more men and women to our Resident programs—that they would seek help and healing in Christ.

  • Please pray with us as we look for more people to add to our building and maintenance staff.

  • Please pray that the Lord would bring young adults to serve in the Servant Leader Program.

Thank you for partnering with us in prayer each month. Your prayers are valuable to us.
